New Powerlink® EM Lighting Control System from Schneider Electric Incorporates Smart Metering Technology

Palatine, Ill. – August 16, 2010 – Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management, today announced the addition of the Powerlink® EM system to its Schneider Electric Powerlink G3 intelligent lighting control product family portfolio. The Powerlink EM system combines individual branch circuit remote control and metering functions in a single lighting panelboard enclosure to ensure users are able to instantly verify the performance of the control system by energy savings by circuit, zone, space, panel or complete lighting system. Furthermore, the Powerlink EM system provides historical trends that can be used to reveal opportunities for additional energy improvements and generates reports to allocate costs according to actual energy used. Smart metering is accomplished using the PowerLogic® Branch Circuit Power Meter (BCPM), which is a highly accurate, full featured multi-branch circuit power meter that provides unrivalled low-current monitoring.

FieldServer Technologies provides communication at South Africa World Cup

July 21, 2010 – World Cup soccer championships from South Africa were enjoyed by many millions of fans around the world. The FieldServer Technologies Model FS-B4010 was installed in all 10 stadiums used for the Soccer World Cup events. Communications rooms in the stadiums used an existing SNMP monitoring system by NetBotz. This system provides CCTV monitoring in the room and SNMP messages to the head office. The FieldServers were used to convert information from different Modbus devices and the Fire Panel data to SNMP to allow the NetBotz system to relay all the information to the head office.

In preparation for the high visibility and increased needs due to the World Cup, the communications rooms were upgraded and improved to handle the expected increase in communications including voice calls, SMS/MMS, as well as internet access. The stadiums required high communications availability, needing to monitor the different aspects of these rooms, including power meters, Carrier chillers, diesel generators and fire alarm panel.

According to nSoft president Bennie de Wet, the end user chose FieldServer, “because of the FieldServer reputation for reliability in critical applications. Also, FieldServer’s library of drivers included not only Modbus, but also the Fire Panel driver as well.” Mr. de Wet goes on to say, “The project manager was particularly pleased that the single gateway could handle all of their conversion needs,”

In addition to these installations by nSoft, GE Security in South Africa also utilized FieldServer gateways to interface EST3 Fire Panels to BACnet front end systems in many of the stadiums.

This server provides secure access to wind power plant control data for systems that may not support the IEC 61400-25 but require access to the wind turbine data. Building Automation in Russia: A Road to Energy Efficiency

Electricity in Russia costs four times less than in Europe (5-6 eurocents per kilowatt compared to 15-25 eurocents in Europe). However, the market price for energy resources in Russia grows 25-30% a year and will reach the European level by 2011. Russia is on its way to start saving. The fact that energy savings and energy efficiency can be reached through effective use of engineering systems in homes and buildings is presently widely known and popular opinion matches the Governmental Program about saving energy. First building automation systems (multi-room, separate light and HVAC controls) appeared in Moscow nearly 10 years ago and since then Intelligent Buildings and Smart Homes have started to gain popularity. In the beginning of building automation market development the main reasons to automate a home were purely ostentatious, i.e. a way to impress your friends with smart controls or raise the class of an office building to boost profits. And of course, the comfort.

Since approximately 2007 the trend has shifted to cost reduction and awareness of unrenewable resources scantiness. EMerge Alliance Continues to Gain Support for DC Power Distribution Improving Energy Efficiency, Sustainability in Buildings

SAN RAMON, CALIF. (May 11, 2010) – The EMerge Alliance – an open industry association leading the rapid adoption of safe, low-voltage direct-current (DC) power distribution and use in commercial building interiors – today announced it has added 15 more companies to its coalition. Now more than 60-members strong, the Alliance continues to gain the support of building industry and technology leaders in a collaborative effort to bring greater energy efficiency and sustainability to new and existing facilities.

New members include Anderson Power Products, IDEAL INDUSTRIES, Leviton Manufacturing Company, Lunera Lighting, ROAL Electronics USA and Traxon Technologies USA at the Participating level; Electri-Cable Assemblies and Universal Lighting Technologies at the General level; ANL Lighting, Donnelly Kerley Builders, Emeral Tech, Integrated Design Associates, PICA Interconnect Solutions and Standard Solar at the Supporting level; and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) at the Liaison level.

In addition to broadening and deepening its membership base, the Alliance has also teamed with the California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC) at the University of California – Davis, a research and education facility that was created to drive the adoption and commercialization of energy-efficient lighting technologies. EMerge has joined the CLTC’s public-private partnership as an affiliate to increase engagement with lighting innovators and contribute to the mission of improving efficiency and practicality of new technologies, like DC-based LED lighting.

“Our focus is on creating opportunities to accelerate the development and advancement of the latest technologies for lighting efficiency,” said Konstantinos Papamichael, co-director of the CLTC. “We’re excited about the rapid progress that can be made with the new DC power platform and look forward to working with the EMerge Alliance to further the efforts to take lighting efficiency to the next level.”

On average, LEDs and solid-state lighting can be up to 10 to 15 percent more efficient in the hybrid AC-DC power distribution system established by the EMerge Alliance Standard. According to EMerge Alliance Chairman Brian Patterson, the CLTC has also signed on to provide resources and expertise to the Alliance in the product registration and evaluation process, which is now open to Governing, Participating and General Members of the Alliance.

“Working with the CLTC and its affiliates, we can make major strides in the movement for new lighting technologies and greener buildings,” said Patterson. “As the Alliance moves forward, we will continue to partner with like-minded groups like the CLTC to further our progress toward application and interoperability of products based on the Standard.”

Both organizations, as well as 14 EMerge members, are participating in LIGHTFAIR® International in Las Vegas, May 12-14, 2010. Demonstrations of the Standard will be on display throughout the expo at EMerge member booths – OSRAM SYLVANIA (#315), Tyco Electronics (#2621) and Lunera Lighting (#2849).
