Connected Multi-Dwelling Units and the Internet of Things
(Landmark Research Project - Connected Home Council -2016)
The goal of this research project is to provide a comprehensive examination of all the major aspects of IoT related to MDUs, including: state of the market, MDU IoT trends, business opportunities, technical barriers and opportunities, future market direction, issues, case studies and industry recommendations.

Intelligent Buildings and the Impact of the Internet of Things  
(Landmark Research Project - Intelligent Buildings Council - 2016)
This CABA research project will examine the impact of IoT related to intelligent buildings. This research will provide actionable data relevant to all segments of the intelligent building value chain, including, but not limited to: building owners, technology manufacturers, builders and developers, integrators and installers, service providers, insurance companies, industry associations and utility companies.

Intelligent Building Design & Implementation
(Landmark Research Project - Intelligent Buildings Council - 2017)
This research will address the approach and application of technical design in intelligent, high-performance buildings from the perspective of architects, building engineers, designers, OEM hardware/software providers, service providers and facility managers. Topics that may be covered include: automated lighting and shading, system integration, HVAC configurations, real-time controls, comfort and productivity, security and access control.

Energy Roadmap for the Connected Home
(Landmark Research Project - Connected Home Council -2017)
There is a renewed interested in the connected home energy sector which is driven not only by the dramatic increase in the Internet of Things, but also by the large projected increases in home energy costs throughout North America. This research would address the many challenges and opportunities surrounding the need for more energy efficient homes. This research will utilize both qualitative (in-depth interviews) and quantitative (consumer or industry questionnaires) research to provide actionable data relevant to: business opportunities, technical barriers and opportunities, future market direction, issues, case studies and industry recommendations.

Improving Organizational Productivity with Building Automation Systems 
(Boutique Multi-Client Research Project - 2016)
NRC and Continental Automated  Buildings Association (CABA) members are poised to undertake a structured initiative to demonstrate that smart, integrated technologies  produce organizational productivity  gains in addition to energy and environmental savings. The result will transform the high-performance  buildings industry by establishing the built environment  as a strategic tool for organizations to achieve their goals.  

Completed Research Projects

Zero Net Energy Buildings: Building Intelligent Controls Driving Success 
(Boutique Multi-Client Research Project - 2015)
This research will examine strategies and technologies applied in large commercial and multi-unit buildings, to identify zero net energy (ZNE) best practices that can become the references for developers, manufacturers, property managers, and property owners. Building automation systems and energy information systems will be characterized and building occupants and owners will be surveyed on the functionality and utilization of these systems. The results of this research will be used to value the system in relation to a ZNE outcome. The goal of this research is to identify the selection criteria, methodology, technology attributes, user preferences and role of the building automation and energy monitoring and information systems in ZNE buildings.
