(IS-2016-93) Smart Cities in Europe – The Future of the built environment

This paper was released in 2016 by Osborne and Clarke. Different ways in which built environments can become smarter are discussed, along with things which might prevent them from improving. Two case studies are described where an area of a city was redeveloped to include smart technology, and their successes are outlined. Better use of data is one way to make a building smarter. The collaboration of all parties involved, including investors, real estate companies, construction companies, architects, tech companies, and more, is essential for true “intelligence” in the built environments of the future
